Dujiangyan, located on the Minjiang River in the western part of the Chengdu Plain, about 50km from Chengdu, was founded in the third Century BC. It is unique in that there is no need for dams to regulate water flow.
For more than two thousand years, Dujiangyan has been playing an effective role in flood control and irrigation, making the Chengdu Plain a fertile land despite drought or waterlogging and one of the most important grain producing areas in China.
Dujiangyan project embodies the wisdom of harmonious coexistence of Chinese people and nature. It is the oldest water conservancy project in the world.
